This post describes severe animal cruelty and neglect.
Imagine driving up to a 40-by-40-foot pen enclosed by T-posts and barbed-wire fencing. Inside, terrified horses were crowded together—many badly injured, bleeding and suffering. One horse lay dead among them. Elsewhere on the property, a second horse was found dead. A third was discovered hog-tied and deceased inside a horse trailer.
This was the horrifying scene Delta Animal Control and the Delta County Sheriff’s Office encountered in June 2022. Because of the violent and threatening behavior of individuals at the property, officers had to call for additional armed backup before they could safely enter. A local veterinarian was brought in to assess the surviving horses and the severity of their injuries. Five of those horses were removed by law enforcement and brought to End of the Trail Rescue. We came to know them as the Delta Five out of Delta, CO.
Through absolutely no fault of their own, these innocent horses endured unimaginable cruelty, neglect and abuse. Once again, our hearts were broken by the suffering human beings had inflicted upon such vulnerable souls. Since their arrival, our staff, volunteers, veterinarians and supporters have worked tirelessly to help the Rescued Five heal—physically and emotionally.
Their rehabilitation has required extensive veterinary treatment, daily care, patience, consistency and time. At the direction of law enforcement, we did not publicize this case because of concerns about possible retaliation by the individuals involved. We respected that guidance while quietly providing the horses with the safety and care they desperately needed.
We finally were awarded custody/ownership of the Delta Five after numerous court postponements and cancellations and we now feel that we can finally share their story – and ask for your continued support as we move forward with their training. The Rescued Five have already traveled an extraordinary road toward healing, but their care continues. Please help us give these innocent survivors the security, compassion and second chance they have always deserved.
Every donation—no matter the amount—helps provide feed, veterinary treatment, training, farrier care and a safe place to recover.
Please stand with the Rescued Five out of Delta. Help us continue Giving Horses a Second Chance. ❤️🐴
